Computers

 

In the 1980s computers were beginning to be used by a lot of people. They were used mostly for business and scientific use. [1] A PC was never invented until the 1970s. [2] The idea of a personal computer became very popular and by 1985 2 million Americans used PC’s for basic office tasks. [3] Apple was the first major computer company to sell PC’s and by 1982 they became the first computer company to have $1 billion as there annual sale. [4] In 1981 Microsoft put its name on the map by introducing Microsoft Disk Operating System, known as DOS, and then they invented Microsoft Windows. [5] All operating systems use a version of these today, but just upgraded.

 

The Internet

 

In 1983 the internet was invented by the United States government, Department of Defense. [6] It was used to connect academic institutions and Universities internal works, to a large database so they could exchange data. [7] Computers used telephone lines to connect to the internet.[8]  Through the internet users can access electronic mail and send files, and access web pages. [9] The internet in the 1980’s was a new tool that people began using and today it is used by everyone who has a computer.
